The desire to live a much healthier life has prompted people to get healthy. One way that they have decided to do this is by getting rid of toxins in their bodies.

The body is naturally equipped with a self-cleaning process; however, too much sugar, caffeine, processed foods, stress, and too little exercise can slow the body’s natural detox function to a slow pace, according to the REALfarmacy website. This hinders the body from cleaning itself when it is up against the vast number of harmful, toxic substances that are in the environment.
In addition, the website also states that if a person is experiencing anxiety and depression, irritability, memory decline, allergies and infections, or skin rashes, among other things, they could be suffering from toxic overload. One way to rid toxins from the body is by drinking healthy smoothies.
“Detox smoothies can help you with general detoxification, or a particular toxic burden. For example, if you need to rid your body of heavy metals incorporating cilantro in your smoothies will help,” Ryan Carmody, the founder of Healthy Smoothie Headquarters, said.
What are the Benefits of Detoxing your Body?
Carmody is just one of many who has made the decision to live a healthier life.
“About five years ago I decided to start eating healthier, and that meant incorporating more fruits and vegetables into my diet,” he said.
Healthy Smoothie Headquarters is a website that Carmody created to share his smoothie recipes and educate readers on which ingredients make a healthy smoothie and why, according to his website.
“It didn’t take long for me to fall in love with smoothies and begin adding in an array of superfoods, herbs, and spices to bolster the nutrition and improve the taste,” Carmody said. “I consume a smoothie every day for breakfast.”
Carmody is a recent graduate of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition and a member of the Weston A. Price Foundation, which is a nonprofit, tax-exempt nutrition education foundation. He has been following the diet for three years. He said he became a certified health coach in order to learn more about health not only for himself, but to help others achieve higher levels of health, well-being, and ultimately, happiness.
“A person whose body is overloaded with toxins could be experiencing any number of health problems. Detox smoothies can offer relief depending on the individual and their toxic burden,” Carmody said.

“Watermelon is a good whole body cleanser, and particularly effective at cleansing the kidneys and liver. Lemon juice helps detoxify the liver. Ginger is great for purging toxins from the body. When you combine several of these ingredients you have what I consider a detox smoothie,” Carmody said.
Drinking Smoothies to Get Rid of Toxins
One way to rid toxins from the body is by drinking the watermelon dandelion greens detox smoothie.
“Dandelion greens are considered by many to be the king of the cleansing greens,” Carmody said. “They help the liver and kidneys rid the body of toxins. Dandelion greens also support proper digestion and their diuretic and laxative effects aid in the elimination of toxins. Dandelion greens are also nutrient dense, containing high amounts of vitamins, minerals—especially calcium, and antioxidants.”
“Watermelon is a great whole body cleanser, and particularly effective at cleansing the kidneys and liver. Cleaning out the toxins currently present in these organs frees them up to properly clear toxins in the future,” Carmody said. “It’s a win-win. There are even three-day watermelon detox diets for those that really want to push the envelope.”
The cleansing cranberry bliss smoothie is another smoothie that can help with detoxing the body.
“Cranberries are rich in vitamins and antioxidants, but perhaps best known for their cleansing powers,” Carmody said. “They help clear toxins and plaque buildup from the body by cleansing the organs involved in elimination and the lymphatic system. Cranberries are also known for offering protection against urinary tract infections, supporting the immune system, benefiting the cardiovascular system, and for their anti-cancer properties. There’s even a popular cranberry juice detox diet as a testament to their cleansing prowess.”
“Lemons and limes both help to cleanse and detox the liver. Their high vitamin C content aids the liver in producing glutathione, the mother of all antioxidants,” he said. “The citric acid in these fruits is also helpful in breaking down unwanted kidney stones. Aside from smoothies, a warm glass of water with lemon and/or lime juice first thing in the morning is a good way to clean out your system.”
How to Make Detox Smoothies
Making detox smoothies is quick and easy. It takes between five and 10 minutes, including prep time and cleanup, according to Carmody.
“Detox smoothies are safe, easy to make, and made from whole foods, herbs, and spices,” Carmody said. “I advise people to research the foods, herbs, and spices that are known to address their particular health concern and combine them, within reason, into a smoothie. If you want to detox your liver, which pretty much everyone needs, craft a smoothie out of ingredients that support liver detox.”

“Detoxing with smoothies is what I consider a mild form of detoxing,” Carmody said. “Meaning, you typically aren’t going to experience adverse effects from consuming detox smoothies.”
“I do find more people are turning to detox smoothies because there’s more awareness around the importance of detoxing and more people are making smoothies so it’s a natural progression,” he said. “If you’re already consuming smoothies regularly, changing up a few of the ingredients to create a detox smoothie is rather easy. We live in a world where convenience is front and center.”
Because the smoothies serve as a mild form of detoxing, according to Carmody, they need to be consumed regularly to see results. “You aren’t going to get in shape by going to the gym once,” he said.
