Technology has given us the ability to have everything at our fingertips, enabling us to gather as much information as we need at an alarming speed. But it has also provided us with the number one distraction from what we should be getting done at any specific moment. Especially when, instead of studying for finals, millions of students are logged onto social media sites trying to do anything except what they should be doing.
The special thing about technology is that it has the ability to be simplified. I think many people forget that, just like we can have everything at our fingertips, we can also stick to the basics while keeping everything functional. Adam Leeb and Patrick Paul, the Hemingwrite creators, have not forgotten that simplicity can sometimes be our most effective tool.
“The Hemingwrite is a distraction-free writing tool with modern technology like a mechanical keyboard, e-paper screen and cloud backups,” they note on the product’s Kickstarter page. It is all you need to get work done without procrastinating. The creators of the Hemingwrite make a great point by saying, “As our computers and phones get more powerful, we become less productive. This is why we built the Hemingwrite, a single-function alternative.” The Hemingwrite is a keyboard minus all the distractions! The Hemingwrite is able to connect to Wi-Fi and is supported by the cloud in which all of your documents are saved automatically. This can allow you to retrieve your work on a standard computer, though USB connections are also supported.
The design is pretty cool too. Think old-school typewriter with a modern day twist. It is the length and width of a traditional keyboard without the number keypad. The screen is about the size of a cell phone’s. “It features a daylight readable, high contrast electronic paper screen for writing indoors, outdoors, in the daytime or at night.” Leeb and Paul state that the Hemingwrite features a four-plus week battery life. According to Kickstarter, it is wrapped in lightweight aluminum and includes a built-in handle for easy transportation.
“The Hemingwrite works right out of the box with no manual required,” the creators explain. Unlike most tech devices where you have access to many browsers, games, applications and more, once the Hemingwrite is turned on, it is ready for you to begin typing away. “We included only the essential features needed for drafting and excluded everything else. Wherever possible, we tried to emulate the simpler writing experience of a typewriter and stayed away from the excesses of modern word processing software. There is no mysterious user interface to learn before you can start writing on your new tool.”
Adam and Patrick are seeking $250,000 in donations by January 23, 2015. They have already reached their goal, but they’re still accepting money from anyone who believes in this productive product. Procrastination is winning the ongoing battle where some of us spend sleepless nights watching YouTube videos instead of finishing that twenty-page paper due at the crack of dawn. Perhaps the Hemingwrite can change that.
Donations can be as small or as big as your heart desires, but anything is greatly appreciated. Pledges made of $25 or more will earn a Hemingwrite T-shirt, simple and comfortable. Donors who give $399 or more will receive the Hemingwrite (regular bird) package at a deep discount to the retail price. The estimated time for delivery is September 2015, and it ships anywhere in the world.
